About sweetener additives
Sweeteners provide sweetness with few or no calories, so they show up in diet drinks, sugar-free gum, low-sugar yoghurts, and tabletop sweetener tablets. The main artificial sweeteners on UK shelves are aspartame (E951), acesulfame K (E950), saccharin (E954), and sucralose (E955). Stevia (E960) and the sugar alcohols (E965 to E968) are derived from natural sources. The World Health Organisation issued a 2023 advisory recommending against using non-sugar sweeteners for weight control after a systematic review of long-term outcomes; aspartame was reclassified the same year by the IARC as possibly carcinogenic to humans.
